About this journey
Georgia and Armenia are neighbours in more ways than geography. Both were among the first nations to adopt Christianity, and both preserved their ancient cultures through centuries of invasion and empire. The monasteries on both sides of the border feel related — mountain-built, stone-carved, deeply serious — and yet the two countries are remarkably distinct in landscape, language, food and character.
From Tbilisi we drive south, crossing into Armenia and descending onto the Ararat plain. Yerevan is a warm, lively city of rose-coloured tufa, with a great market, excellent restaurants and the Cascade complex rising above the old centre. Outside the capital the countryside is magnificent: the gorge road to Garni and Geghard, the red cliffs of the Arpa canyon at Noravank, and the extraordinary view of Mt Ararat from Khor Virap — the mountain floating above the monastery on a clear morning is one of the great sights of the Caucasus.
The return route can swing through the border at a different crossing, taking in the cave city of Vardzia and the old fortress town of Akhaltsikhe before returning to Tbilisi. The journey can be as short as four days or as long as a week — we'll shape it around your time and interests.
How the journey usually flows
Day 1 · Tbilisi to the border & Yerevan
We drive south from Tbilisi, crossing the Georgia-Armenia border (usually around midday) and continuing to Yerevan, arriving by evening to settle in and explore the city centre.
Day 2 · Yerevan & Geghard / Garni
A morning in the city — the Cascade, the market, the Matenadaran manuscript library — then out to Garni and Geghard in the afternoon. The UNESCO monastery of Geghard is carved directly into its canyon wall.
Day 3 · Noravank & Khor Virap
South through the Ararat plain to the red canyon of Noravank, then to Khor Virap at the base of Ararat — the view of the great mountain above the monastery walls is unforgettable on a clear day.
Day 4 · Return to Georgia
We head north and cross back into Georgia, often via Akhaltsikhe and Vardzia, arriving in Tbilisi by evening. Longer itineraries add Dilijan, Lake Sevan or the Debed canyon monasteries before the return.

Pickup & good to know
We collect you from your Tbilisi hotel on the first morning. You'll need your passport at the border — the crossing is straightforward for most nationalities, and we handle the logistics. Accommodation in Yerevan ranges from guesthouses to central hotels; we'll suggest what fits your group when you message us.
Most nationalities can enter Armenia without a visa for up to 180 days. We'll confirm the rules for your passport when you get in touch. Spring and autumn are the best times for the Ararat view; summer can be very hot on the Armenian plateau. The monasteries require modest dress.

Do we need a visa to enter Armenia?
Most nationalities can enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days — including EU, UK, US, Canadian and Australian passport holders. We'll confirm the rules for your specific passport when you contact us. The border crossing itself is simple and takes 30–60 minutes.
How do we cross the Georgia-Armenia border?
We cross by car at one of the main land border crossings, most commonly via Sadakhlo-Bagratashen. The crossing is generally smooth. We handle all the logistics — you just need your passport. There's no vehicle permit required for private cars.
What are the must-see sights in Armenia?
Geghard monastery carved into living rock (UNESCO), the Hellenistic Garni temple above its basalt gorge, the clifftop monastery of Noravank in a red sandstone canyon, and Khor Virap — with Mt Ararat filling the horizon. Yerevan itself, with its pink tufa buildings and the Cascade, is worth a day in the city.
How many days do we need for Georgia and Armenia?
Four days is the workable minimum — border crossing, Yerevan, the main sights, return. Five to seven days allows for a richer trip: Dilijan, Lake Sevan, the Debed canyon monasteries, and more time in Yerevan. Tell us how many days you have and we'll build the right itinerary.
